20 Years of Insomniac Doze: Tetsuya Fukagawa’s Favorite Records (2006 vs. 2026)
Few albums defined the intersection of screamo, post-rock, and atmospheric heavy music quite like envy’s landmark 2006 release, Insomniac Doze. To mark its 20th Anniversary reissue, we caught up with envy frontman Tetsuya Fukagawa to reflect on the era when the record first landed and to take stock of where the emotive, heavy underground stands two decades later.
Below, Tetsuya shares three foundational picks from 2006 alongside three current 2026 releases pushing those same boundaries today.
The 2006 Classics
Converge – No Heroes
"I know many people love Jane Doe, but personally, I prefer this album."
Mogwai – Mr Beast
"I had the opportunity to participate with poetry reading (for 'I Chose Horses'), and it was a really great experience for me. This is an album I love."
Struggle For Pride – You Bark, We Bite
"This album had a huge impact on me. Their way of being active as an artist was very unique, and they were ahead of their time in every way."
The 2026 Picks
Greet Death – Die in Love
"Yoshitake introduced me to this artist, and I became a fan. Their music makes me feel calm when I listen to it."
Habak – Mil orquídeas en medio del desierto
"I became interested in this album after hearing that they like envy. It's really cool! I hope we can play together someday."
Jagged City – There Are More of Us, Always
"This is the new band by Carlos (Torres, former touring member of Explosions In The Sky), whom I really love. The songs are great! I would love to see them live as well."
